About Jason

Jason Outlaw, DMD DMSc, is a classically trained stained glass artist based in Boston, Massachusetts. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, he first apprenticed in stained glass at the Beverly Arts Center in 1996. He is the founder of Vitraux and creates predesigned and customizable works of art within a wide range of genres.  His work blends traditional stained glass techniques with modern materials such as mirror, vitreous paints, polymers, epoxy, wood, concrete, and carbon steel. He also incorporates graphic design, lasers, and sandblasting into his art to expand the boundaries of the stained glass tradition.

In 2016 a major glass company, Spectrum Art Glass closed which was a devastating blow to the stained glass industry, many raw stained glass materials that Jason used to create his art were no longer manufactured. The COVID-19 lockdowns were an unwelcome opportunity to experiment in creating new materials and techniques to manufacture his own raw materials to be used in the creation of his art. He named the series of experiments as Vitraux Chromatique: Vitraux is the plural word for stained glass in French, and chromatique means chromatic in French. Vitraux Chromatique became a series of daily experiments to make glass innovations that were never before seen in art glass.

Most significant was the development of Vitraux Chromatique Canvas, which was the reimagination of glass as a medium for collaboration with other artists. The Chromatique Canvas begins with a theme or motif in stained glass, and the rendering of a unique work of art surrounding the glass motif. There are no limits to the content or medium of the canvas, and can include photography, graffiti, oil painting, acrylics, water colors, charcoal, sketching, and more. Vitraux Chromatique began as an experiment in surface treatments on glass, and became a canvas for collaboration with artists across disciplines.
